New RTXC RTOS Delivers Big Features in a Small Footprint

Houston, TX (PRWEB) June 24, 2008

Continuing its commitment to embedded application flexibility, Quadros Systems, Inc., a leading supplier of configurable and scalable real-time operating systems (RTOS), today announced the newest member of the RTXC family of real-time operating systems: the RTXC Microcontroller RTOS (RTXC/mc). This multi-tasking RTOS was designed specifically to meet the growing demand for high performance, small footprint 32-bit systems. It operates in half the memory footprint and with a 40% cost savings compared to the more full-featured RTXC/ms RTOS.

Designed for the new wave of 32-bit processors.

The new generation of 32-bit microcontrollers, such as ARM7, ARM Cortex-M3, and Freescale ColdFire v1/v2 processors, offers significant advantages to manufacturers of embedded systems who are currently using 8-bit controllers. Lower power operation, more integration, simpler coding and an easy migration path to higher level features. These are just some of the attributes that are moving development teams to new 32-bit architectures. But to realize these advantages these teams must also rethink their software strategy. Central to 32-bit development is a well-architected operating system that can manage more complex system resources and keep operations synchronized. Real-time operating systems like RTXC/mc offer a shortened development cycle, easier coding, and a system that can respond to real-time deadlines.

Complete features in a tiny footprint

In configuring RTXC/mc, the Quadros team paid close to the trade-offs between size and performance. The result is an RTOS that provides the object classes and kernel services needed for robust application development and performance while maintaining a very small memory footprint. It boasts seven kernel object classes and 70 kernel services but fits into 12 kilobytes of ROM (non-volatile memory). With the RTXCgen configuration tool or the full-fledged graphical design tool, VisualRTXC, the user can further scale the RTOS down to less than 2 KB, depending on the needs of the application. The rich set of kernel services gives the developer more precise control over the performance of the system. And the flexible scheduling models provide even greater efficiency in synchronizing with events, passing data and managing code execution.

The right fit for today’s system and a clear growth path for tomorrow.

RTXC/mc is a member of the RTXC Quadros RTOS family and is fully API-compatible with the rest of the family members. That means that developers can confidently develop their next application on RTXC/mc, knowing that their code is fully portable to the more fully featured RTXC/ms or RTXC/dm kernels – or even multi-core implementations.

Available now.

RTXC/mc is available immediately. Pricing starts at $ 6500 for a royalty-free product license that includes the kernel and application configuration tool, RTXCgen. For the user wanting the RTXCgen features plus the ease of use that a graphical application design tool provides, a bundle with VisualRTXC, starts at $ 7500.

About the RTXC Quadros Family of Real-time Operating Systems

The RTXC Quadros family is comprised of five kernel architectures offering distinct performance advantages for each of the major processing models. RTXC/ss (single stack) utilizes a lightweight specialized executive to support high data rate and signal processing applications. RTXC/mc (microcontroller) is designed for resource- and budget-limited applications. RTXC/ms (multi-stack) is optimized for control processing using an event-driven, prioritized, preemptive scheduler. RTXC/dm (dual mode) marries RTXC/ms and RTXC/ss and is ideal for convergent processing applications which combine DSP/dataflow and RISC/control processing in a single-core processor. Both RTXC/ms and RTXC/dm are brought together under RTXC/mp (multiprocessing) in various combinations to support multi-core and multiprocessor implementations.
