Silicon Wave and Synopsys Accelerate Integration of Bluetooth Wireless Technology into ASIC Designs
SiW1701 Radio Modem and DesignWare BlueIQ Core Offer Low Cost, Low Power Solution
SAN DIEGO and MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA, September 16, 2002 Silicon Wave, Inc., a world leading silicon developer and provider for Wireless Personal Area Networks, and Synopsys, Inc. (Nasdaq:SNPS), the technology leader for integrated circuit design, today announced that that they have collaborated to optimize the new DesignWare BlueIQ Core for use with the SiW1701 Bluetooth Radio Modem. Designers can easily integrate the DesignWare BlueIQ Core into their application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and combine it with the Silicon Wave radio modem to create cost-effective, low-power Bluetooth wireless solution.
The DesignWare BlueIQ Core is a synthesizable intellectual property (IP) core that includes a complete link manager and baseband controller and can be targeted to ASIC processes or field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA). The core is optimized for low-power and easy integration, and also includes a 6811-compatible 8-bit microcontroller, which completely offloads the Host CPU of all real-time Bluetooth activity. In addition, the DesignWare BlueIQ Core includes a direct interface to the SiW1701 Radio Modem and takes advantage of all of its power saving features.
Customers require a low-risk, cost-effective method for adding Bluetooth wireless technology into their products, said Warren Savage, director of engineering, Synopsys IP & Systems Group. Synopsys has worked closely with Silicon Wave to take advantage of Silicon Waves power management techniques to develop a low-power, easy-to-integrate solution that addresses these needs.
The Silicon Wave SiW1701 is a fully integrated, direct-conversion radio modem designed for low system cost, ultra-low power consumption and superior RF performance over an extended temperature range. The SiW1701 is Bluetooth Specification Version 1.1 qualified, features a 100 percent digital interface for easy integration and is in full volume production.
The DesignWare BlueIQ Core operates as a completely independent subsystem with its own microcontroller and memory, removing any need for firmware integration and enabling a quick insertion into the target ASIC, said Janet Walther, director of partner programs for Silicon Wave. This unique removes the barriers of IP integration, and because the DesignWare BlueIQ Core is optimized to take full advantage of our highly integrated radio modem, the total solution paves the way for adoption of Bluetooth wireless technology into high volume products.
Synopsys DesignWare Bluetooth Development Kit
The DesignWare Bluetooth Development Kit, available from Synopsys, allows hardware and software designers to evaluate the DesignWare BlueIQ Core and develop complete Bluetooth software applications. It is Bluetooth Specification Version 1.1 qualified and features a module from Sony EMCS, which incorporates the Silicon Wave SiW1701 Radio Modem. In addition to using the Development Kit, hardware designers can also use the Design View of the DesignWare BlueIQ Core, which includes a simulation model of the baseband and link manager, as well as the SiW1701 Radio Modem. The Design View is available for no additional charge to the more than 25,000 DesignWare users via the Synopsys website at http://www.synopsys.com/dwrequest.
