XJTAG Limited (http://www.xjtag.com), a supplier of boundary scan development and test solutions, has bolstered its technical team with the appointment of Karl Miles to the position of field application engineer. Karl will provide technical support to XJTAGs growing customer base in the UK and will also spearhead business development for the Cambridge-based company.
Karl joins XJTAG from BAE Systems where he was a lead hardware engineer working on the qualification and production phases of Eurofighter. Prior to joining BAE Systems in 2002, Karl spent five years with Nortel Networks as a senior digital hardware engineer. Karl has a 1st Class B.Eng (Honours) degree from Salford University.
We needed someone with strong technical skills to support our rapidly growing customer sites across the UK and Karl has all the attributes we were looking for, said Simon Payne, XJTAGs chief executive officer. He is a highly qualified hardware engineer that has experience of circuit design, debug and testing boards with JTAG devices such as FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays). He is also highly ambitious and resourceful which is exactly the kind of person we look for at XJTAG.
The XJTAG Development System was launched to meet the growing market need for cost-effective tools which could test smaller more tightly packed circuit boards increasingly populated by Ball Grid Arrays (BGAs) and chip scale devices. By using the JTAG chain and writing and then reusing test scripts, printed circuits can be tested and debugged in hours/days as opposed to weeks with other competitive systems.

What is JTAG?
Advances in silicon design, such as increasing device density and, more recently, ball grid array (BGA) and chip scale packaging, have reduced the efficacy of traditional electronic circuit testing methods. In order to overcome these problems and others; some of the worlds leading silicon manufacturers combined to form the Joint Test Action Group (JTAG). The findings of this group were used as the basis for the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) standard 1149.1: Standard Test Access Port and Boundary Scan Architecture and subsequently the standard became known as JTAG.
