President Obama Proposes to Tackle Asbestos in Public Schools

Houston, TX (PRWEB) October 04, 2011

Shrader & Associates, LLP appreciates President Obamas proposal to tackle asbestos in public schools. The proposal is included in the American Jobs Act, a bill intended to stimulate job creation in the United States while improving the standard of living for many. A portion of the $ 447 billion plan would go toward asbestos abatement, or the identification and removal of asbestos building materials.

Im glad President Obama is keeping the safety of kids and their teachers in mind as he decides where to place the countrys resources, said Justin Shrader, the managing partner at Shrader & Associates, LLP.

The jobs bill would fund the renovation of about 35,000 public schools, according to the speech he made before a joint session of Congress. Asbestos abatement is lengthy and expensive process, Shrader said. Specially trained workers need to contain the substance once it is removed to prevent the area from becoming contaminated.

Public school budgets have been trimmed and trimmed, he said. I cant imagine that many schools have the resources to rid their buildings of this carcogenic material.

Asbestos is a material that was once widely used in construction for its strength and heat resistance. Its fibers, however, were found to cause mesothelioma, lung cancer and other serious diseases. In the United States, many asbestos products were banned by the early 1980s, but old buildings are likely to contain it. In older school buildings, the fiber may well be found in ceiling tiles, heat and cooling systems and flooring material. If the asbestos is disturbed, it can pose a serious danger to anyone who inhales the dust.

Fibers are dangerous because they can become embedded in the tissue of the lung and, over time, cause tumors to form. It is common for a mesothelioma patient to go decades without discovering the cancer, but in many cases this discovery takes place at a very late stage of the cancer and is accompanied by a grim prognosis.

My job brings me into contact with a lot of hard-working, honest people who wake up and discover a serious disease, Shrader said. Whether or not money should be spent to prevent young people from that threat is hardly a question at all.

Those with a little oneor anyone elsein the family who may have been exposed to asbestos should consider taking legal action. Shrader & Associates offers a complimentary legal consultation.
