The jobs bill would fund the renovation of about 35,000 public schools, according to the speech he made before a joint session of Congress. Asbestos is a material that was once widely used in construction for its strength and heat resistance. Its fibers, however, were found to cause mesothelioma, lung cancer and other serious diseases. In the United States, many asbestos products were banned by the early 1980s, but old buildings are likely to contain it. In older school buildings, the fiber may well be found in ceiling tiles, heat and cooling systems and flooring material.
