Port St. Lucie, FL (PRWEB) June 14, 2011
In Florida, Port St. Lucie police say they arrested a mother, her boyfriend, her son, her nephew, and a friend on 50 felony warrants. What lead to the arrests? Surveillance cameras bought at Home Security Store, and set up at the home of one smart cop.
According to court documents, William Berry was arrested on 22 warrants, Georgia Brown on 8 warrants, Michael Oliver on 19 warrants, Eddie Oliver on 2 warrants, and Alex Flynn on 1 warrant.
According to court documents, from December of last year to February of this year, the suspects allegedly targeted homes and vehicles in search of high end construction tools, compressors, generators, and electronic equipment. âThey would then allegedly steal the items and pond the stolen goods for money to support their drug habits,â says Port St.Lucie Police Detective Christopher DAngelo.
The main (alleged) culprits would be Michael and William, court documents indicate. They would actually go and enter the vehicles (allegedly) or the garages or the sheds and Eddy would be the lookout. They would try to hit two to four houses a night, said DâAngelo.
According to court records, investigators recovered approximately $ 80,000 in stolen items, but when the ring of thieves got too close to a string of surveillance cameras, the game was over. This is where Port St. Lucie Police officer Peter Chunn comes in, who set up a CCTV surveillance system at his own home and captured the culprits on-camera when they reportedly tried to break into his neighbors home.
Chunn bought the Do-It-Yourself surveillance equipment at HomeSecurityStore.com, using the websites Build Your Surveillance System in 6 Easy Steps software.
I setup the system and installed it within two days, all under $ 1000. The camera setup was a cinch, the wiring took a bit longer, said Chunn. Chunn adds it was a good thing he had the system in place because these culprits were stealing everything that wasnt nailed down.
I live in a safe neighborhood, but crime can happen anywhere. The suspects (allegedly) broke into my neighbors home through a rear window, stole a wallet off the table, then left and came to my driveway, Chunn said.
Chunn says that his cameras caught the suspects on tape when they were allegedly breaking in next door, but when they came to Chunns property, the picture was crystal clear. Chunn adds that one suspect walked right up to his parked squad car, looked in it, left, then went to a nearby gas station to try and allegedly use a stolen credit card. Again, the suspects were caught on tape, this time by the gas station surveillance cameras, so indicates court records. In turn, investigators developed some leads.
We made contact with William Berry at his residence and thats when we recovered probably about 55 pieces of stolen property in the back of his residence, DAngelo said. At that point we were able to piece together several of our ongoing investigations.
The suspects are awaiting trial and will stand before the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit of Florida. In the meantime, Chunn says he has caught several vandals with his surveillance equipment and recommends anyone concerned with protecting their property do as he did buy some security equipment and install it yourself.
I think that in 2011, a home security system is a very valuable tool that helps aid you, as well as law enforcement, by documenting any illegal or just plain suspicious activity that you as a homeowner would want to know about. Its important to protect your family from would be criminals any way you can, and a home surveillance system does just that, Chunn said.
