New York, NY (PRWEB) January 15, 2009
PartStore.com, the nation’s leading e-tailer for replacement parts for consumer electronics, appliances, computers and other household products, reports that Americans are 82% more likely than a year ago to repair a product rather than replace it, according to a recent survey. Of the 2900 survey respondents, 60% say the economy is influencing the shift in their behavior.
With over 8 million parts in its catalog, PartStore provides parts for virtually every product in the home, from AC adapters, batteries, cables, lamps and knobs to circuit boards, color wheels and light engines. PartStore saw its online business increase 32% in 2008 over 2007 as consumers turned to the internet to extend the life of their electronics and kitchen appliances.
“People have learned that they can get a new heating element for under $ 40 instead of buying a new kitchen stove, saving hundreds if not thousands of dollars,” stated Dan Seligson, VP of E-commerce for PartStore.com. “They are replacing parts to easily repair products and tinkering with everything from fridges to computers.”
This repair versus replace trend is consistent with findings announced recently by Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) which stated that retail sales dipped in Q4 2008 compared to prior years as consumers held off purchases for the holiday season, and “2009 will be a bit worse (in consumer spending) than 2008” according to CEA industry analysis director Steve Koenig and economist Shawn DuBravac.
Of the 2900 survey respondents, 79% had repaired household products in the past year. Of those consumers 54% of them have fixed major appliances while the next most fixed product was computers with 36%.
