John (Jack) W. Olivo, Jr. was a founding partner of the intellectual property law firm of Ward & Olivo, which had offices in New York City, Summit, New Jersey, Marshall, Texas, Dallas, Texas and Hartford, Connecticut. The firm, founded in 1992 and strategically dissolved in 2011, handled a wide range of intellectual property matters including patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets. Over the span of two decades, the firm enjoyed many successes and became somewhat unique and prominent balancing two fronts: the defense of nationally significant patent cases and the enforcement of patents for plaintiffs on a contingent fee basis. Notably, several of the most influential and substantial law firms in the world engaged Ward & Olivo for its expertise in the fields of telecommunications and software, with Jack being a leader in those efforts. Ward & Olivo represented every major airline, numerous banking, retail and scientific companies, defending all on a traditional hourly fee basis. Ward & Olivo’s other nationally preeminent focus, the enforcement of patents on a contingent fee basis, eventually began to conflict with its traditional defense practice, requiring that the partners separate their respective practice groups; John Ward moving on to continue representing Ward & Olivo’s traditional hourly fee based patent litigation and prosecution practices, while Jack has moved on to form the Olivo Law Group and the Olivo Patent Group, to service his intellectual property enforcement clients, many from Ward & Olivo, on a contingent fee basis.
Going forward, Jacks legal practice will focus on enforcing intellectual property claims on a contingent fee basis. To facilitate serving his contingent fee clients while expanding into other technological and creative disciplines, Jack and the Olivo Law Group have partnered with the Birmingham, Alabama based law firm of Heninger Garrison Davis, LLC. Combining Jacks intellectual property expertise with litigation powerhouse Heninger Garrison Davis, the combined firm will bring to its clients a broad range of ideas and experience pertaining to patent, trademark and copyright law. Jack’s colleague from Ward & Olivo, Maureen Abbey, will join him at Heninger Garrison Davis, bringing to the firm expertise in life sciences and pharmaceutical technology.
Prior to forming Ward & Olivo, Jack was associated with the law firm of Pennie & Edmonds, based in New York City. While at Pennie & Edmonds, Jack represented numerous leading companies in the travel, finance, retail and technology sectors, and concentrated on the defense of patent enforcement claims involving complex technology.
Jack has been credited as one of the principal inventors of the v-chip, which regulates the amount of violence transmitted by electronic media such as televisions, DVD players, video games and so forth. In addition, Jack is a stake holder in numerous ventures engaged in the creation, licensing and enforcement of intellectual property, and he will continue those efforts. He is regarded as a so-called “deal maker” in the intellectual property field, and his new affiliation will enable that practice to grow, not encumbered by the conflicts presented by a traditional hourly defense practice.
Prior to attending New York Law School in 1986, Jack was employed as an electrical engineer with RCA Astro-Electronics in Princeton, engaged in the design of communications systems that are used today in connection with direct broadcast satellite communications and defense satellites.
Jack is a 1984 graduate of Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He serves as an advisor to the school’s Board of Trustees on matters involving the implementation of new technology.
Professional memberships include Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Society of Automotive Engineers, Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, American Bar Association (sections on intellectual property and communications law), New York State Bar Association (sections on intellectual property and entertainment law), New Jersey State Bar Association (section on intellectual property law), Association of Trial Lawyers of America, New Jersey Patent Law Association (chairman, committee on ethics, grievances and the unauthorized practice of law) and the New York Intellectual Property Law Association (chairman, design protection).
Jack is admitted to practice law in the state courts of New York and New Jersey, and the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, the District Court of New Jersey, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the United States Supreme Court.
Jack and his family reside in La Jolla, California, and through his combined law practice with Heninger, Garrison, Davis, he and his associates now have offices in New York, New Jersey and Georgia, with a base of operations in Birmingham, Alabama. Jack also maintains close working relationships with strategic law affiliates in Texas and California, and maintains “non-law” offices in those and other states that broadly facilitate his intellectual property endeavors. Consequently, he frequently conducts business meetings throughout the entire United States.
