Rockwell Automation Announces Turbine Supervisory Instrumentation Solution

Drawing from more than 50 years of experience in machinery protection and condition monitoring, Rockwell Automation fulfills the requirements of Turbine Supervisory Instrumentation (TSI) with the addition of the new Allen-Bradley XM 121A Absolute Shaft and the XM 442 Voted Electronic Overspeed Detection System (EODS) Relay Modules. Providing customers cost-effective monitoring and protection of critical plant-floor assets, the new modules are a scalable solution that can be easily integrated into a plants control and information system. The modules meet the unique needs of applications requiring absolute shaft measurements and applications requiring redundant overspeed protection.


Turbines are critical plant assets that must be monitored and protected, said Ralph DeLisio, business manager, Integrated Condition Monitoring, Rockwell Automation. With the XM machinery protection and condition monitoring series, operations and maintenance personnel can accurately gather and analyze critical measurements needed to identify tendencies and trends in equipment performance, before an event occurs. These products and services are designed to meet the demanding requirements of turbine supervisory instrumentation applications and can be integrated with plant monitoring needs to provide customers with a complete asset management strategy.


Established by the ISA, TSI is a series of measurements intended to recognize and diagnose key performance issues related to turbo machinery. TSI system measurements include radial shaft displacement, thrust, eccentricity, case and differential expansion, valve position, temperature, speed and acceleration. As part of an overall machinery protection and condition monitoring strategy, the data collected by the XM series modules can be used to identify and prevent issues with equipment operation, resulting in improved turbine performance and availability.


We recognized that the installation and retrofit of a TSI system requires a highly specialized skill set that includes expertise in system and display design, as well as information management and system integration, said DeLisio. To assist in addressing the TSI requirements, weve made Rockwell Automation service professionals available to help implement each facet of the project — from installation and factory acceptance testing to commissioning support, as well as overall project management.


The following modules are the latest additions to the XM series:


The XM-121A Absolute Shaft Module measures the turbine shafts vibratory motion relative to free space, which is an important diagnostic metric on some large steam turbines. The modular and open design of XM machine condition monitoring and protection technology allows users to expand the XM-121A system to include other modules or to easily link the device into a broader system.


The new XM-442 Voted EODS Relay Module is the final piece in the Allen Bradley XM EODS. The XM-442 provides four high-power relays — three that serve as redundant shutdown relays, and one that serves as the alarm relay and redundant logic circuits that allow the XM-442 module to operate correctly even in the presence of a single internal circuit fault. As part of the Allen-Bradley EODS solution, the XM-442 Module helps with the reliability and redundancy necessary for performance, measurement and relay requirements of the American Petroleum Institute Standards 670 and 612 relative to overspeed protection.
