Air2U USB ADAPTER USES RF MICRO DEVICES’ ULTIMATEBLUE SINGLE-CHIP BLUETOOTH COMPONENT

GREENSBORO, NC (PRWEB) September 16, 2004

RF Micro Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq: RFMD), a leading provider of proprietary radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) for wireless communications applications, today announced that Air2U, a leading Taiwanese designer and manufacturer of wireless consumer electronics products, is using RFMD’s SiW3000 UltimateBlue single-chip Bluetooth component in its USB adapter. The adapter has been certified by Microsoft as an authorized device for testing the compatibility of Bluetooth wireless products operating with the Windows XP system. The Air2U USB adapter is available in a WHQL qualification development kit from the RFMD® eStore at http://www.rfmd.com/order.asp.

Dr. Gregory Chu, chairman of Air2U, said, “We selected RFMD’s single-chip Bluetooth component because of their ability to deliver a highly integrated ROM-based solution. Also, the unique architecture of the SiW3000 enabled us to eliminate the need for external flash and other active RF components, allowing us to produce a low-cost USB adapter.”

Mike Yin, director of product marketing for the Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) product line at RF Micro Devices, said, “The Air2U USB adapter incorporating RFMD’s single-chip SiW3000 Bluetooth solution enables customers to quickly meet the rigorous WHQL test requirements and achieve Microsoft interoperability and qualification in order to use the highly recognized ‘Designed for Windows’ logo. The WHQL certification ensures compatibility and interoperability with Microsoft products and is essential, as the recently released Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Windows XP is designed to support Bluetooth protocol stack software.”

In order to use the “Designed for Windows” logo on products enabled with Bluetooth technology, device manufacturers are required to submit their products to Microsoft’s Windows Hardware Qualification Lab (WHQL) for compatibility testing. The Air2U USB adapter is an approved development tool that allows device manufacturers to quickly confirm interoperability between their products and the Windows XP operating system.

About the SiW3000 UltimateBlue IC

The SiW3000 is a highly integrated, single-chip Bluetooth solution that combines a direct conversion radio modem with an ARM7TDMI® processor core, Bluetooth baseband logic and complete protocol software in ROM (read only memory). All active RF components have been integrated into the CMOS-based IC, making it a complete low-cost solution. The SiW3000’s robust, mature baseband delivers the extra MIPS (millions of instructions per second) required to integrate additional software and enables full scatternet support without performance degradation. The SiW3000 is Bluetooth Specification Version 1.2 qualified and supports Adaptive Frequency Hopping (AFH). The single-chip solution also integrates RFMD’s UltimateBlue Coexistence Technology to address the unique interference issues when Bluetooth and 802.11 wireless technologies are collocated in the same device (such as a notebook PC), allowing users to operate Bluetooth and other 2.4GHz wireless technologies simultaneously while maintaining optimal system throughput, range and responsiveness.
