clocked 8-bit random pattern generator for CMOS synth

Posted on: 20 Jan 2016

Motivation I was building some Lo-Fi CMOS synthies, just like the ones you see here: http://hackaday.com/2015/02/04/logic-noise-sweet-sweet-oscillator-sounds/ or here: http://www.nicolascollins.com/hackingtutorial11.htm Soon after I played around with some simple sequencers and multiplexers to generate more complex sound patterns. I thought it would be cool to have a device to gate oscillators or switch multiplexers with a random […]

Bismuth-based nanoribbons show ‘topological’ transport, potential for new technologies

Posted on: 19 Jan 2016

Researchers have created nanoribbons of an emerging class of materials called topological insulators and used a magnetic field to control their semiconductor properties, a step toward harnessing the technology to study exotic physics and building new spintronic devices or quantum computers.

Wireless Power Outlets RF from Raspberry Pi

Posted on: 19 Jan 2016

Have you ever wanted to wirelessly control power outlets from your phone? You could buy a Belkin WeMo Switch for over $40 for 1 outlet or build your own with 5 outlets for under $35 if you already own a Raspberry Pi. Hopefully this post will guide you in the right direction. Hardware Needed: Etekcity 5 Pack (Try […]

KaraOkay Microphone Amplifier

Posted on: 19 Jan 2016

Here is an all-analog, all-through-hole, cheap & cheerful preamplifier for that perennial problem of getting the microphone amplification just right, which is a challenge not only with the faithful reproduction of lead vocals during concerts and recordings, but also with campfire and karaoke-ish performances specially when the beer takes hold. The two operational amplifiers of […]

NASA image: Pluto's haze in bands of blue

Posted on: 18 Jan 2016

This processed image is the highest-resolution color look yet at the haze layers in Pluto’s atmosphere. Shown in approximate true color, the picture is constructed from a mosaic of four panchromatic images from the Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) splashed with Ralph/Multispectral Visible Imaging Camera (MVIC) four-color filter data, all acquired by NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft on July 14, 2015

Scientists take steps to make weak TB drugs strong again

Posted on: 18 Jan 2016

Biophysicists have discovered why the bacteria that cause tuberculosis (TB) are naturally somewhat resistant to antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones. Their findings, based on mapping the detailed three-dimensional structure of the drugs interacting with an essential enzyme in the TB germ, also reveal why some TB drugs are more potent than others and suggest how drug developers can make fluoroquinolones more efficacious against mutations that make the lung disease drug resistant.

Designing and building a 2m low pass filter

Posted on: 18 Jan 2016

I’ve been playing with the DRA818V modules that have been making quite a stir in the amateur radio world at the moment. I haven’t gotten one on a spectrum analyzer yet, but I have reason to believe that it will require a low pass filter to be RF legal. I’ll write more about that once […]

WiFi LED Light (ESP8266 + WS2812B + Lua)

Posted on: 17 Jan 2016

Hi, I built a prototype for a WiFi controllable LED light, using the popular ESP8266 module running the NodeMCU firmware [1]. To allow controlling the WS2812B LEDs from Lua, I extended the firmware with a bit of C code [2] The YouTube video shows it in action: http://youtu.be/oTnsXuxRcE8 Please find all necessary files attached. Have […]

DIY SMD LED heart

Posted on: 16 Jan 2016

In this article I will try to tell you about the gift I made for my girlfriend! I got here is a LED heart. I apologize for my bad English!  The basis of the scheme is a microcontroller Atmega8, 1K resistor, selected in such a way as not to overload the microcontroller ports. SMD resistors […]

Small graphic OLED displays for great prices

Posted on: 15 Jan 2016

Even your device can be more user friendly thanks to various pictograms displayed on Winstar WEG series displays with a great contrast and viewing angle.  100×16 pixels at series Winstar WEG010016 isn´t that much at the first sight. But when we realize, that such display represents a sort of a “replacement” or “upgrade” of a character display […]
