Freescale Semiconductor and Fujitsu Cooperate to Deliver Hyundai Autonet’s NAVI System

Munich (PRWEB) November 10, 2004

mobileGT™ Alliance expands internationally to offer a proven solution and greater support for navigation and infotainment system designers.

Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE:FSL) and Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe (FME) are cooperating to deliver highest-performance embedded solutions for in-vehicle navigation, infotainment and driver information systems (DIS), as well as industrial control.

Hyundai Autonet, a leader in automotive multimedia electronics, intends to base its next-generation NAVI family of 3-D navigation systems on Freescale’s 32-bit, 400 MHz, PowerPC™-based MPC5200 processor; Fujitsu’s high-performance “Coral P/PA” (MB86296) graphics display controller; and Tilcon Software’s graphics software.

“Working together, Freescale and Fujitsu are reducing the time it takes customers like Hyundai Autonet to develop feature-rich, high-end navigation and driver information systems,” said Bill Pfaff, vice president and general manager of Freescale’s Digital Audio, Radio and Telematics business. “This collaboration will help foster continued innovation in tracking on-the-road location.”

The high-performing combination of the Coral PCI graphics engine and the MPC5200 processor has yielded design-ins in automotive and industrial applications.

“This agreement between Freescale and Fujitsu is a major breakthrough in this market,” said Dirk Weinsziehr, senior director of marketing at Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe GmbH. “In bringing together these leaders in technology development, we’re helping our customers create price-performance competitive systems with strong, truly differentiating features.”

mobileGT Alliance expands to help meet designers’ needs

The addition of Fujitsu and Tilcon has further expanded the roster of the mobileGT Alliance, a group of key navigation- and infotainment-focused vendors working to enable the latest customized DIS technologies. Their product contributions will allow Hyundai Autonet and others to leverage a pre-integrated graphics solution, which helps speed development time and minimize development risk.

The mobileGT Alliance also includes a broad base of operating system and support vendors, allowing developers to start with a proven solution and then deploy their own end-products on a variety of operating systems. The alliance supports both the Linux® operating system (OS) and QNX® OS technology, which are the operating systems most in demand today.

About Freescale’s MPC5200

The MPC5200 is a low-power, 760 MIPS processor built on the PowerPC core. It includes support for Ethernet, USB, PCI, ATA, I2S, I2C, SPI, serial, J1850 and CAN (Controller Area Network) interfaces, as well as Double Data Rate (DDR) memory and a double precision Floating Point Unit (FPU). The robust I/O and processing power of the MPC5200 help eliminate the need for separate controllers. And, for tasks such as voice recognition or intensive data processing, the controller can replace a digital signal processor (DSP). About Fujitsu’s Coral PA

The MB86296 “Coral PA” graphic controller includes several characteristics that make it ideal for use in modern car navigation. The chip offers an internal operating frequency of 166MHz in full automotive temperature range, enabling the rendering engine of the device to achieve a 10-fold improvement in texture mapping and map drawing quality compared to previous devices. In addition, a fast memory bus, support for six independent layers, dual display support, advanced alpha-blending features and enhanced video input facilities are available. Using the built-in PCI-interface V2.1, the “Coral PA” is ideally suited for the MPC5200.

About the mobileGT Alliance

mobileGT™ refers to both an architecture and an alliance of key vendors in the navigation, infotainment and telematics industry committed to enabling the latest customized driver information systems technologies. Freescale’s mobileGT architecture provides automakers and their suppliers a single platform from the automotive semiconductor leader. While the mobileGT platform combines hardware and software for one of the most network-ready and cost-effective platforms on which to integrate navigation, telematics, radio, multimedia and Internet technologies. mobileGT Alliance members support and drive adoption of the platform.
