Lumerical Solutions, Inc. (http://www.lumerical.com), a global provider of optoelectronic design software, announces the release of DEVICE 1.0, a TCAD device simulation tool for the design, analysis and optimization of semiconductor optoelectronic devices. DEVICE provides an intuitive and easy to learn user interface for the complete physical layout, analysis and optimization of optoelectronic devices through its integration with Lumericals photonic design tools. The comprehensive feature set offered by DEVICE allows it to address a wide set of applications including CMOS image sensors, photovoltaic devices and photonic integrated circuit elements.
From the outset, DEVICE was designed to leverage the intuitive interface offered by Lumericals FDTD Solutions and MODE Solutions to reduce the learning required and increase productivity for both new and existing users. Together with an easy-to-use data import/export capability that links these products together, users can access a broad array of optoelectronic modeling capabilities in a set of tools that historically have only been available by using disparate products often obtained from multiple different companies. Traditionally, the optical and electrical aspects of optoelectronic devices have been modeled using tools from multiple vendors, said Adam Reid, Product Manager for DEVICE. With the introduction of DEVICE, optoelectronic component designers now have access to a comprehensive set of design tools that have been built from day one to work well together, and are available from a single vendor.
A Full-Featured Optoelectronic Design Environment
In contrast with existing products initially conceived for electrical devices, DEVICE has been designed to address optoelectronics applications through its carefully chosen feature set. While experienced electrical designers will appreciate the high productivity and rapid learning curve with the DEVICE user interface, optical designers with broader interests in overall optoelectronic device performance for multiple different material systems will find their unique needs addressed. DEVICE represents a major step forward for Lumericals simulation capabilities in the CMOS image sensor application space, said William Gazeley a Design Engineer at Aptina. Complementing Lumericals existing optical simulation products with a tool that models the electrical collection efficiency is a crucial step in obtaining a complete model of the system.
A Powerful Design Tool that Exploits Advanced Computing Technology
DEVICE offers a powerful platform for the design of optoelectronic devices. With support for all major desktop operating systems, as well as a wide range of HPC technologies, DEVICE integrates easily into complex computing environments. Lumericals concurrent computing technology allows users to run jobs on multiple independent computing resources, maximizing the speed at which results can be generated and devices can be optimized. With frequent and regular product updates to address the evolving needs of the optoelectronic design community, DEVICE is uniquely positioned to facilitate the optimization of optoelectronic components across a wide set of emerging applications.
With the growing trend of leveraging a single fabrication process to integrate optoelectronic devices with traditional integrated circuits, there is a pressing need for a unified optoelectronic design solution. With DEVICE, Lumerical is providing another critical link in the chain of design tools required to exploit silicon photonics and electronics foundry services such as OpSIS, according to University of British Columbia Prof. Lukas Chrostowski. The new DEVICE tool adds the important capability of modeling active components including silicon photonic modulators and detectors. UBC students will use this tool to model and design high-speed travelling-wave Mach-Zehnder modulators, ring and disk modulators, Bragg grating modulators, optical switches, and variable optical attenuators. As with the other Lumerical tools, we expect this tool to have an excellent and easy to use interface, simplifying the modeling and optimization of advanced devices.
Lumerical is now shipping DEVICE 1.0. Interested parties can download a free, 30-day trial or learn more about DEVICE online.
