Holographic lens printing method could allow printing of telescope lenses in space
Posted on: 04 Sep 2015
(Phys.org)—Researchers have developed a method for printing optical holographic lenses that could greatly simplify their fabrication. Because the method can be performed quickly and easily, it could potentially be used by astronauts to print lenses while in space for holographic lens telescopes.
Scan-E: An optical blood pressure sensor Using Atmega1284
Posted on: 04 Sep 2015
Introduction For this project, we created a noninvasive heart rate and blood pressure measurement tool with the intention of gathering data for large-scale analysis for the automatic prediction of heart disease. In modern society, patients often have access to a wealth of electronic data concerning their social networks and surroundings, but have little personalized insight […]
Low-Budget Laser Projector Using Atmega1284
Posted on: 03 Sep 2015
Introduction For our ECE 4760 final project, we designed a low-budget laser projector system. The project was broken into main sections: the custom hardware designed and fabricated to make up the projector, the circuitry controlling the hardware, and the custom software controlling the circuitry. We also chose this project due to our interest in optics […]
Loons return faithfully to the same wintering sites year after year
Posted on: 02 Sep 2015
Common Loons (Gavia immer) nest on lakes across Canada and the northern U.S., but every winter they disperse, many to the open ocean where they’re difficult to track. It’s been well established that many loons return to the same nesting sites every spring, but new research in The Condor: Ornithological Applications shows for the first time that they are similarly faithful to their wintering sites
First ancient genome recovered from the Mediterranean area
Posted on: 02 Sep 2015
An international team of researchers has sequenced the first complete genome of an Iberian farmer, which is also the first ancient genome from the entire Mediterranean area. This new genome allows to know the distinctive genetic changes of Neolithic migration in Southern Europe which led to the abandonment of the hunter-gatherer way of life
Autonomous Air-Hockey Goalie Using atmega 1284
Posted on: 02 Sep 2015
This project is intended to perform the role of a goal-keeper in the popular arcade game Air Hockey. In this project, the robot shown below senses a puck coming toward it and moves in the direction of the puck’s motion so as to stop it. This problem was identified as fairly challenging to solve based […]
NFC Transmitter and Receiver Using Atmega1284
Posted on: 01 Sep 2015
Introduction Our project is building one set of NFC module including a NFC transmitter and a NFC receiver both using ATmega1284p microcontroller. We will be using coupled coils to transmit message modulated by a high frequency carrier, whose frequency is the standard frequency for Near Field Communication (NFC) – 13.56MHz (Wikipedia, 2013). In our project, […]
White-tailed eagles avoid large bullet fragments during consumption of carcasses
Posted on: 31 Aug 2015
White-tailed eagles detect and avoid the ingestion of large metal particles (larger than 8 mm) but ignore smaller metal particles whilst feeding on shot mammalian carcasses. Lead-based bullets split into numerous small metal fragments when penetrating an animal’s body, whereas lead-free rifle bullets either deform without leaving any particles in the tissue or fragment into larger particles
Remote Controlled POV Display Using Atmega1284
Posted on: 31 Aug 2015
Introduction For our ECE 4760 final project, we designed and implemented a remote controlled persistence-of-vision (POV) display that is able to display multiple patterns based on remote input. The primary components of the display are a rotor and a motor. The rotor is mainly consisted of a row of LEDs and a microcontroller. The microcontroller […]
Researchers develop technique to produce a direct image of the DNA helix and its inner structure
Posted on: 31 Aug 2015
Enzo di Fabrizio and his team have developed a new technique to produce a direct image of the DNA helix and its inner structure. This is the first time scientists have ever been able to produce an image of DNA that allows a direct visual evaluation of quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the building blocks of life.
