Mismanagement of discarded electronics within Europe involves a volume 10 times that of e-waste shipped to foreign shores in undocumented exports, according to a comprehensive 2-year investigation into the functioning of the used and waste electronics market.

POV Magic 8 Ball Using Atmega1284

Posted on: 30 Aug 2015

1.Introduction In our final project of ECE 4760, we designed a magic 8 ball, which is a rotating POV (persistence of vision) display controlled by voice commands. In our design, users can ask yes/no based questions via a small speaker, and the rotating POV part can display random answer of yes or no to answer […]

The Air Mouse Using Atmega1284

Posted on: 29 Aug 2015

Introduction “A wireless mouse unit that requires no flat surface by using ultrasonic positioning.” For our ECE 4760 final project,we have designed a surface-less mouse interface using ultrasonic transmission as our final project in this class. The idea is to have a ultrasonic transmitter as a mouse, which represents  the mouse’s position in space, with […]

Increasingly severe disturbances weaken world's temperate forests

Posted on: 28 Aug 2015

Longer, more severe, and hotter droughts and a myriad of other threats, including diseases and more extensive and severe wildfires, are threatening to transform some of the world’s temperate forests, a new study published in Science has found. Without informed management, some forests could convert to shrublands or grasslands within the coming decades.

EEG Magic Cat Ears Using Atmega1284

Posted on: 28 Aug 2015

Kang Li(kl694) and Zhenxuan Qiu(zq39) For our ECE 4760 final projec, we built a pair of toy “cat ears” using electroencephalography (EEG) with the AVR microcontroller. The basic function of it is that it can change the gesture of the “Ears” based on the participant’s emotion. The user doesn’t need to do anything except for […]

Drumming Teaching and feedback device Using Atmega1284

Posted on: 28 Aug 2015

For our ECE 4760 final project, we designed and built a drum trainer that can be attached to most Japanese drum surface and will detect and wirelessly transmit different drum hit types to other players’ drum trainers. The trainer is able to determine whether the user makes a “Loud Beat”, a “Soft Beat”, or a […]

New technique could enable design of hybrid glasses and revolutionize gas storage

Posted on: 28 Aug 2015

A new method of manufacturing glass could lead to the production of ‘designer glasses’ with applications in advanced photonics, whilst also facilitating industrial scale carbon capture and storage. An international team of researchers, writing today in the journal Nature Communications, report how they have managed to use a relatively new family of sponge-like porous materials to develop new hybrid glasses.

New survey examines racial and ethnic differences in technology use by millennials

Posted on: 26 Aug 2015

A new study conducted by the Media Insight Project, a collaboration between the American Press Institute and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, found that while the similarities to the rest of their generation are numerous, there are some distinct differences in the way that Hispanic and African American Millennials use technology to access news and information. The source of their information is one area of difference: these young adults are more likely to use YouTube and Instagram for news than Millennials in general, though all groups rely heavily on Facebook.

Study shows nesting under white lights causes increased hormone levels in songbirds

Posted on: 26 Aug 2015

(Phys.org)—A small team of researchers with members from The Netherlands Institute of Ecology, the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology and Wageningen University has found that wild great tits living under street lights that emit white light have higher than normal amounts of the stress hormone corticosterone in their blood. In their paper published in Royal Society – Biology Letters, the group describes the field studies they carried out, what they learned and offer suggestions for ways to protect wildlife from the damaging impact of light pollution.

New graphene-based catalysts for the energy industry

Posted on: 26 Aug 2015

Researchers at the Universitat Jaume I in Spain have developed materials based on graphene that can catalyse reactions for the conversion and storage of energy. The technology patented by the UJI combines graphene and organometallic compounds in a single material without altering the most interesting properties of graphene, such as its electrical conductivity.
