How to secure the entrepreneurial future of a family business
Posted on: 11 Nov 2014
Regardless of whether a business has been in the family for one year or one thousand, the person in charge typically hopes that handing the reins to a close relative will ensure security for future generations. But that’s easier said than done, given that 30 per cent of firms make it to the second generation of family ownership, and only 12 per cent make it to the third.
3D gForce Mouse Using Mega32
Posted on: 11 Nov 2014
Introduction “Our 3D gForce Mouse will enable use to move the curser in the air freely with the capacity of scrolling” The rationale for this design is two fold. We wanted to do this design because we wanted to make a zero-impact pointing device for those with injury. We also wanted to implement this injury […]
Stationary Helicopter Using Atmel Mega32
Posted on: 10 Nov 2014
Intro Summary Thinking about what a CDE (culminating design experience) should be, we devised a project that combines the microcontroller programming principles learned in ECE 476: Microcontroller Design with the control theory concepts learned in ECE 472: Feedback Control Systems to create an academically viable stationary helicopter. The device consists of a lever with a […]
Hungry pythons mean male possums live fast and die young
Posted on: 10 Nov 2014
The study, led by researchers from the University of Western Sydney’s Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment, along with researchers from the Australian National University, the University of Tasmania and James Cook University in Queensland, looked at the behaviour of common brushtail possums from a population in North Queensland that was exposed to high rates of predation by carpet pythons.
INFRARED TRACKING SYSTEM USING ATMEGA32
Posted on: 08 Nov 2014
Introduction Infrared (IR) Our project is an infrared (IR) tracking system. A beacon, placed on the object to be tracked, continuously emits infrared signals in all directions. The signals coming from the beacon are detected by 2 IR receivers mounted on 2 stepper motors, which rotate independently and are in separate locations. The direction each receiver […]
Engineered for tolerance, bacteria pump out higher quantity of renewable gasoline
Posted on: 05 Nov 2014
An international team of bioengineers has boosted the ability of bacteria to produce isopentenol, a compound with desirable gasoline properties. The finding, published in mBio, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology, is a significant step toward developing a bacterial strain that can yield industrial quantities of renewable bio-gasoline.
Breaking down BPA and similar pollutants with sunlight, nanoparticles and graphene
Posted on: 05 Nov 2014
Many pollutants with the potential to meddle with hormones—with bisphenol A (BPA) as a prime example—are already common in the environment. In an effort to clean up these pollutants found in the soil and waterways, scientists are now reporting a novel way to break them down by recruiting help from nanoparticles and light
NEIKER fells pine trees to study their wind resistance
Posted on: 04 Nov 2014
Technicians of the Basque Institute for Agricultural Research and Development NEIKER-Tecnalia have in recent days been felling trees to simulate the effect of the wind in mountains in the Bizkaia locality of Artzentales. Forestry experts of the French Institute for Agricultural Research INRA together with technicians from NEIKER-Tecnalia and the Chartered Provincial Council of Bizkaia felled radiata pine specimens of different ages in order to find out their resistance to gales and observe the force the wind needs to exert to blow down these trees in the particular conditions of the Basque Country
Arkanoid Video Game using Atmega32
Posted on: 03 Nov 2014
Introduction High Level Design After working with the ATmega family of processors for the first six lab assignments, and working extensively with generating television screen images, we decided that a video game would be a viable goal for a final project. While not as hardware-intensive as some projects, we decided that our experimentation with the […]
Facebook has URL for users running Tor-enabled browsers
Posted on: 01 Nov 2014
A reassuring message on Friday from Facebook: “It’s important to us at Facebook to provide methods for people to use our site securely.” That is why Facebook implemented HTTPS across the service and Perfect Forward Secrecy, HSTS (HTTP Strict Transport Security), and other technologies. (In July 2013, Facebook announced they now use https by default for all Facebook users
